व्यामिश्रो वा हस्ति रथ अश्वानां चक्र अन्तेषु हस्तिनः पार्श्वयोर् अश्वा रथा उरस्ये ॥
Alternatively , in a mixed formation of elephants, chariots, and horses, the elephants should be placed at the edges of the battle array, the horses on the flanks, and the chariots in the center.

हस्तिनाम् उरस्यं रथानां कक्षाव् अश्वानां पक्षाव् इति मध्य भेदी ॥
Elephants [are placed] at the chest, chariots at the sides, and horses on the wings. This [formation] is called "breaking the center."

विपरीतो अन्त भेदी ॥
The reverse of this [formation] can harass the extremities [of the enemy's army].

हस्तिनाम् एव तु शुद्धः साम्नाह्यानाम् उरस्यम् औपवाह्यानां जघनं व्यालानां कोट्याव् इति ॥
Indeed , among elephants, the war-elephants are cleansed on the chest, the riding-elephants on the haunches, and the vicious elephants on their temples.

O horse, a host of armored warriors, a breastplate of pure ones, arm pits and flanks.
