यदा वा पश्येत् "मित्रम् आक्रन्दश् च मे शूर वृद्ध अनुरक्त प्रकृतिः, विपरीत प्रकृतिः परः पार्ष्णि ग्राहश् च आसारश् च, शक्ष्यामि मित्रेण आसारम् आक्रन्देन पार्ष्णि ग्राहं वा विगृह्य यातुम्" इति तदा विगृह्य यायात् ॥

When a king is so fortunate as to have a powerful friend in front and a powerful ally (ákranda) in the rear, both with brave and loyal subjects, while the reverse is the case with he enemies both in front and in the rear, and when he finds it possible for his friend to hold his frontal enemy in check, and for his rear-ally to keep his rear-enemy (párshnigráha) at bay, then he may march after proclaiming war against his frontal enemy.

yadA vA pazyet "mitram Akrandaz ca me zUra vRddha anurakta prakRtiH, viparIta prakRtiH paraH pArSNi grAhaz ca AsAraz ca, zakSyAmi mitreNa AsAram Akrandena pArSNi grAhaM vA vigRhya yAtum" iti tadA vigRhya yAyAt ॥

यदा वा फलम् एक हार्यम् अल्प कालं पश्येत् तदा पार्ष्णि ग्राह आसाराभ्यां विगृह्य यायात् ॥

When a king finds it possible to achieve the results of victory single-handed in a very short time, then he may march (against his frontal enemy) after proclaiming war against his rear-enemies.

yadA vA phalam eka hAryam alpa kAlaM pazyet tadA pArSNi grAha AsArAbhyAM vigRhya yAyAt ॥

यदा वा पश्येत् "न शक्यम् एकेन यातुम् अवश्यं च यातव्यम्" इति तदा सम हीन ज्यायोभिः सामवायिकैः सम्भूय यायाद्, एकत्र निर्दिष्टेन अंशेन, अनेकत्र अनिर्दिष्टेन अंशेन ॥

When a king finds himself unable to confront his enemy single-handed and when it is necessary that he should march, then he should make the expedition in combination with kings of inferior, equal, or superior powers.

english translation

yadA vA pazyet "na zakyam ekena yAtum avazyaM ca yAtavyam" iti tadA sama hIna jyAyobhiH sAmavAyikaiH sambhUya yAyAd, ekatra nirdiSTena aMzena, anekatra anirdiSTena aMzena ॥

तेषाम् असमवाये दण्डम् अन्यतमस्मान् निविष्ट अंशेन याचेत ॥

When the object aimed at is of a definite nature, then the share of spoils should be fixed; but when it is of a manifold or complex nature, then with no fixity in the share of the spoils. When no such combination is possible, he may request a king either to supply him with the army for a fixed share, or to accompany him for an equal share of the spoils.
