पूर्व कृत अपदानं प्रतिज्ञाय अपहरन्तम् एक देश दृष्ट द्रव्यं कर्मणा रूपेण वा गृहीतं राज कोशम् अवस्तृणन्तं कर्म वध्यं वा राज वचनात् समस्तं व्यस्तम् अभ्यस्तं वा कर्म कारयेत् ॥

Regarding those criminals who rob in accordance with the threat previously made by them, who have made use of the stolen articles in part, who have been caught hold of in the very act or with the stolen articles, who have attempted to seize the king's treasury, or who have committed culpable crime, may, in accordance with the order of the king, be subjected once or many times to one all of the above kinds of torture.

pUrva kRta apadAnaM pratijJAya apaharantam eka deza dRSTa dravyaM karmaNA rUpeNa vA gRhItaM rAja kozam avastRNantaM karma vadhyaM vA rAja vacanAt samastaM vyastam abhyastaM vA karma kArayet ॥

सर्व अपराधेष्व् अपीडनीयो ब्राह्मणः ॥

Whatever may be the nature of the crime, no Bráhman offender shall be tortured.

तस्य अभिशस्त अङ्को ललाटे स्याद् व्यवहार पतनाय, स्तेयो श्वा, मनुष्य वधे कबन्धः, गुरु तल्पे भगम्, सुरा पाने मद्य ध्वजः ॥

The face of a Bráhman convict shall be branded so as to leave a mark indicating his crime:--the sign of a dog in theft, that of a headless body in murder; that of the female part (bhaga) in rape with the wife of a teacher, and that of the flag of vintners for drinking liquor.

english translation

tasya abhizasta aGko lalATe syAd vyavahAra patanAya, steyo zvA, manuSya vadhe kabandhaH, guru talpe bhagam, surA pAne madya dhvajaH ॥

ब्राह्मणं पाप कर्माणम् उद्घुष्य अङ्क कृत व्रणम् । कुर्यान् निर्विषयं राजा वासयेद् आकरेषु वा ॥

After having thus branded to a wound and proclaimed his crime in public, the king shall either banish a Bráhman offender or send him to the mines for life.
