स्वयम् अग्नौ जाते समुत्थापिते वा प्रहवणे प्रेक्षा अनीक दर्शन सङ्ग सौरिक कलहेषु नित्य युद्ध श्रान्त बले बहुल युद्ध प्रतिविद्ध प्रेत पुरुषे जागरण क्लान्त सुप्त जने दुर्दिने नदी वेगे वा नीहार सम्प्लवे वा अवमृद्नीयात् ॥
When fire, accidental or intentionally kindled, breaks out; when the enemy's people are engaged in a sacrificial performance, or in witnessing spectacles or the troops, or in a quarrel due to the drinking of liquor; or when the enemy's army is too much tired by daily engagements in battles and is reduced in strength in consequence of the slaughter of a number of its men in a number of battles; when the enemy's people wearied from sleeplessness have fallen asleep; or on the occasion of a cloudy day, of floods, or of a thick fog or snow, general assault should be made.

svayam agnau jAte samutthApite vA prahavaNe prekSA anIka darzana saGga saurika kalaheSu nitya yuddha zrAnta bale bahula yuddha pratividdha preta puruSe jAgaraNa klAnta supta jane durdine nadI vege vA nIhAra samplave vA avamRdnIyAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस्कन्ध आवारम् उत्सृज्य वा वन गूढः शत्रुं निष्क्रान्तं घातयेत् ॥
Or having concealed himself in a forest after abandoning the camp, the conqueror may strike the enemy when the latter comes out.
english translation
skandha AvAram utsRjya vA vana gUDhaH zatruM niSkrAntaM ghAtayet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमित्र आसार मुख्य व्यञ्जनो वा सम्रुद्धेन मैत्रीं कृत्वा दूतम् अभित्यक्तं प्रेषयेत् "इदं ते छिद्रम्, इमे दूष्याः" "सम्रोद्धुर् वा छिद्रम्, अयं ते कृत्य पक्षः" इति ॥
A king pretending to be the enemy's chief friend or ally, may make the friendship closer with the besieged, and send a messenger to say: "This is thy weak point; these are thy internal enemies; that is the weak point of the besieger; and this person (who, deserting the conqueror, is now coming to thee) is thy partisan."
english translation
mitra AsAra mukhya vyaJjano vA samruddhena maitrIM kRtvA dUtam abhityaktaM preSayet "idaM te chidram, ime dUSyAH" "samroddhur vA chidram, ayaM te kRtya pakSaH" iti ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतं प्रतिदूतम् आदाय निर्गच्छन्तं विजिगीषुर् गृहीत्वा दोषम् अभिविख्याप्य प्रवास्य अपगच्छेत् ॥
The conqueror, having seized that messenger who is returning with an envoy, should publicize his fault , banish him, and then withdraw.
english translation
taM pratidUtam AdAya nirgacchantaM vijigISur gRhItvA doSam abhivikhyApya pravAsya apagacchet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततो मित्र आसार व्यञ्जनो वा सम्रुद्धं ब्रूयात् "मां त्रातुम् उपनिर्गच्छ, मया वा सह सम्रोद्धारं जहि" इति ॥
Then the pretending friend may tell the besieged: "Come out to help me, or let us combine and strike the besieger."
english translation
tato mitra AsAra vyaJjano vA samruddhaM brUyAt "mAM trAtum upanirgaccha, mayA vA saha samroddhAraM jahi" iti ॥
