"उपस्थितम् अकारयतः कृतम् एव विद्याद्" इत्य् आचार्याः ॥
"If [the employer does] not get the work done when [the employee] is ready, it shall be regarded as work done," thus [say] the teachers.

न इति कौटिल्यः ॥
But Kautilya objects to it;

कृतस्य वेतनं न अकृतस्य अस्ति ॥
for wages are to be paid for work done, but not for work that is not done.

स चेद् अल्पम् अपि कारयित्वा न कारयेत् कृतम् एव अस्य विद्यात् ॥
If an employer, having caused his labourer to do a part of work, will not cause him to do the rest for which the latter may certainly be ready, then also the unfinished portion of the work has to be regarded as finished.

देश काल अतिपातनेन कर्मणाम् अन्यथा करणे वा न असकामः कृतम् अनुमन्येत ॥
But owing to consideration of changes that have occurred in time and place or owing to bad workmanship of the labourer, the employer may not be pleased with what has already been turned out by the labourer.
