चतुर् भाग सुवर्णं वा वालुका हिङ्गुलुकस्य रसेन चूर्णेन वा वासयेत् ।

or by making use of the powder or solution of vermilion, gold equal to one-fourth the amount of silver of the ornament may be painted (vásayet) on it.

तपनीयं ज्येष्ठं सुवर्णं सुरागं सम सीस अतिक्रान्तं पाक पत्त्र पक्वं सैन्धविकया उज्ज्वालितं नील पीत श्वेत हरित शुक पत्त्र वर्णानां प्रकृतिर् भवति ॥

Pure and glittering gold is tapaníya. This combined with an equal quantity of lead and heated with rock-salt (saindhav'ika) to melting point under dry cowdung becomes the basis of gold alloys of blue, red, white, yellow (harita), parrot and pidgeon colours.

tapanIyaM jyeSThaM suvarNaM surAgaM sama sIsa atikrAntaM pAka pattra pakvaM saindhavikayA ujjvAlitaM nIla pIta zveta harita zuka pattra varNAnAM prakRtir bhavati ॥

तीक्ष्णं च अस्य मयूर ग्रीव आभं श्वेत भङ्गं चिमिचिमायितं पीत चूर्णितं काकणिकः सुवर्ण रागः ॥

The colouring ingredient of gold is one kákaní of tíkshna which is of the colour of the neck of a peacock, tinged with white, and which is dazzling and full of copper (pitapúrnitam).

तारम् उपशुद्धं वा अस्थि तुत्थे चतुः सम सीसे चतुः शुष्क तुत्थे चतुः कपाले त्रिर् गोमये द्विर् एवं सप्त दश तुत्थ अतिक्रान्तं सैन्धविकया उज्ज्वालितम् ॥

Pure or impure silver (tára) may be heated four times with asthituttha (copper sulphate mixed with powdered bone), again four times with an equal quantity of lead, again four times with dry copper sulphate (sushkatuttha) again three times in skull (kapála), and lastly twice in cowdung.

tAram upazuddhaM vA asthi tutthe catuH sama sIse catuH zuSka tutthe catuH kapAle trir gomaye dvir evaM sapta daza tuttha atikrAntaM saindhavikayA ujjvAlitam ॥

एतस्मात् काकण्य् उत्तरमाद् विमाषाद् इति सुवर्णे देयम्, पश्चाद् राग योगः, श्वेत तारं भवति ।

Thus the silver acted upon seventeen times by tuttha (shodasatutthátikrántam) and lastly heated to white light with rock salt may be made to alloy with suvarna to the extent of from one kákani to two Máshas. Then the suvarna attains white colour and is called sveta-tára.

etasmAt kAkaNy uttaramAd vimASAd iti suvarNe deyam, pazcAd rAga yogaH, zveta tAraM bhavati ।
