Sushruta Samhita
प्राणिनां पुनर्मूलमाहारो बलवर्णौजसां च । स षट्सु रसेष्वायत्तः; रसाः पुनर्द्रव्याश्रयाः; द्रव्याणि पुनरोषधयः । तास्तु द्विविधाः- स्थावरा जङ्गमाश्च ॥२८॥
Food is the principal factor which materially contributes to the strength, complexion and vitality (Ojah) of animated beings. Food consists of six different tastes (Rasa) ॥ which cannot exist independently of the substances॥ in which they are inherent. These substances which are called the Oshadhis may be divided into two classes such as the mobile and the immobile.
