अथ गुप्ते शुचौ देशे स्नातः शुचिर् अलङ्कृतः। सम्पूज्य भास्करम् भक्त्या ग्रहान् भान्य् अथ गुह्यकान् ॥
Then, having bathed in a secret and pure place, being jrare, adorned, having worshipped with devotion the sun, the planets, the asterisms (bha), and the elves (guhyaka) -

पारम्पर्योपदेशेन यथाज्ञानम् गुरोर् मुखात् । आचार्यः शिष्यबोधार्थम् सर्वम् प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान्॥
Let the teacher, in order to the instruction of the pupil— himself beholding everything clearly, in accordance with the knowledge handed down by successive communication, and learned from the mouth of the' master (guru)—

भूभगोलस्य रचनाम् कुर्याद् आश्चर्यकारिणीम् । अभीष्टम् पृथिवीगोलम् कारयित्वा तु दारवम्॥
Prepare the wonder-working fabric of the terrestrial and stellar sphere (bhubhagola), having fashioned an earth-globe of wood, of the desired size -

दण्डम् तन्मध्यगम् मेरोर् उभयत्र विनिर्गतम् । आधारकक्षाद्वितयम् कक्षा वैषुवती तथा॥
- Fix a staff, passing through the midst of it and protruding at either side, for Meru ; and likewise a couple of sustaining hoops (fcakshi), and the equinoctial hoop ; . -

भगणाम्शाङ्गुलैः कार्या दलितैस् तिस्र एव ताः। स्वाहोरात्रार्धकर्णैश् च तत्प्रमाणानुमानतः॥
These are to be made" with graduated divisions (angula) of degrees of the circle (bhagana) Farther—by means of the several day-radii, as adapted to the scale established for those other circles -
