भूवृत्तपादविवरास् ताश् चान्योन्यम् प्रतिष्ठिताः। ताभ्यश् चोत्तरगो मेरुस् तावान् एव सुराश्रयः॥
These cities are situated at an equal distance from each other on each quarter of earth’s equator. At an equal distance from them, to the north is situated the Uttara Meru, the abode of the demigods (sura).
english translation
तासाम् उपरिगो याति विषुवस्थो दिवाकरः। न तासु विषुवच्छाया नाक्षस्योन्नतिर् इष्यते॥
The sun travels on a tract above them during the equinoxes, hence they don’t have equinoctial shadow (vishuvacchäyä) nor is there any no elevation of the axis (aksonnati).
english translation
मेरोर् उभयतो मध्ये ध्रुवतारे नभः स्थिते । निरक्षदेशसम्स्थानाम् उभये क्षितिजाश्रये॥
The polar stars (dhruvatärä) are located between both the poles. Because of their placements in a place with no latitude (niraksha), both are fixed on the horizontal line (kshitija rekhä).
english translation
अतो नाक्षत्रोच्छ्रयस् तासु ध्रुवयोः क्षितिजस्थयोः। नवतिर् लम्बकाम्शास् तु मेरावक्षाम्शकास् तथा॥
Hence there is in those cities no elevation of the pole, the two pole-stars being situated in their horizon ; but their degrees of co-latitude (lambaka) are ninety : at Meru the degrees of lati- tude (aksha) are of the same number.
english translation
मेषादौ देवभागस्थे देवानाम् याति दर्शनम्। असुराणाम् तुलादौ तु सूर्यस् तद्भागसञ्चरः॥
In the half-revolution beginning with Aries, the sun, being in the hemisphere of the gods, is visible to the gods : but while in that beginning with Libra, he is visible to the demons, moving in their hemisphere.
