अथार्काम्शसमुद्भूतम् प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः। भक्त्या परमयाभ्यर्च्य पप्रच्छेदम् मयासुरः॥
Then the demon Maya, prostrating himself with hands suppliantly joined before him who derived his being from the part of the Sun, and revering him with exceeding devotion, inquired as follows : . -

भगवन् किम्प्रमाणा भूः किम् आकारा किम् आश्रया। किम्विभागा कथम् चात्र सप्तपातालभूमयः॥
O blessed one! of what measure is the earth? of what form? how supported? how divided? and how are there in it seven interterranean (patala) earths?
english translation
अहोरात्रव्यवस्थाम् च विदधाति कथम् रविः। कथम् पर्येति वसुधाम् भुवनानि विभावयन्॥
And how does the sun oause the varying distinction of day and night? how does he revolve about the earth, enlightening all creatures?
english translation
देवासुराणाम् अन्योन्यम् अहोरात्रम् विपर्ययात् । किम् अथ तत् कथम् वा स्याद् भानोर् भगणपूरणात्॥
For what reason are the day and night of the gods and of the demons opposed to one another? or how does that take place by means of the sun's completion of his revolution?
english translation
पित्र्यम् मासेन भवति नाडीषष्ट्या तु मानुषम् । तद् एव किल सर्वत्र न भवेत् केन हेतुना॥
Why does the day of the Fathers consist of a month, but that of mortals of sixty nadis? for what reason is not this latter everywhere the case?
