धृता तनूरुशती मे पुराणी येनेह सत्त्वं परमं पवित्रम् । शमो दमः सत्यमनुग्रहश्च तपस्तितिक्षानुभवश्च यत्र ।। ५-५-२४ ।।

The Vedas are My eternal transcendental sound incarnation. Therefore the Vedas are śabda-brahma. In this world, the brāhmaṇas thoroughly study all the Vedas, and because they assimilate the Vedic conclusions, they are also to be considered the Vedas personified. The brāhmaṇas are situated in the supreme transcendental mode of nature — sattva-guṇa. Because of this, they are fixed in mind control [śama], sense control [dama], and truthfulness [satya]. They describe the Vedas in their original sense, and out of mercy [anugraha] they preach the purpose of the Vedas to all conditioned souls. They practice penance [tapasya] and tolerance [titikṣā], and they realize the position of the living entity and the Supreme Lord [anubhava]. These are the eight qualifications of the brāhmaṇas. Therefore among all living entities, no one is superior to the brāhmaṇas. ।। 5-5-24 ।।

english translation

वेद मेरे शाश्वत दिव्य शब्दावतार हैं, इसलिए वे शब्द-ब्रह्म हैं। इस जगत में ब्राह्मण समस्त वेदों का सम्यक् अध्ययन करते हैं और उनको आत्मसात् कर लेते हैं, इसलिए उन्हें साक्षात् मूर्तरूप वेद माना जाता है। ब्राह्मण सतोगुणी होते हैं फलस्वरूप उनमें शम, दम एवं सत्य के गुण पाये जाते हैं। वे वेदों का मूल अर्थ वर्णन करते हैं और अनुग्रहवश समस्त बद्धजीवों को वेदों के उद्देश्य का उपदेश देते हैं। वे तपस्या तथा तितिक्षा का अभ्यास करते हैं और जीवात्मा तथा परम ईश्वर के पदों का अनुभव करते हैं। ये ही ब्राह्मणों के आठ गुण (सत्त्व, शम, दम, सत्य, अनुग्रह, तपस्या, तितिक्षा यथा अनुभव) हैं। अत: समस्त जीवों में ब्राह्मण सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं। ।। ५-५-२४ ।।
