तत्र चतुर्धा भिद्यमाना चतुर्भिर्नामभिश्चतुर्दिशमभिस्पन्दन्ती नदनदीपतिमेवाभिनिविशति सीतालकनन्दा चक्षुर्भद्रेति ।। ५-१७-५ ।।

sanskrit

On top of Mount Meru, the Ganges divides into four branches, each of which gushes in a different direction [east, west, north and south]. These branches, known by the names Sītā, Alakanandā, Cakṣu and Bhadrā, flow down to the ocean. ।। 5-17-5 ।।

english translation

मेरु पर्वत की चोटी पर गंगा नदी चार धाराओं में विभक्त हो जाती है और प्रत्येक धारा अलग-अलग दिशाओं की ओर (पूर्व, पश्चिम, उत्तर तथा दक्षिण) वेग से प्रवाहित होती है। ये धाराएँ सीता, अलकनन्दा, चक्षु तथा भद्रा नाम से विख्यात हैं और ये सब सागर की ओर बहती हैं। ।। ५-१७-५ ।।
