स यदा दुग्धपूर्वसुकृतस्तदा कारस्करकाकतुण्डाद्यपुण्यद्रुमलताविषोदपानवदुभयार्थशून्यद्रविणान् जीवन्मृतान् स्वयं जीवन् म्रियमाण उपधावति ।। ५-१४-१२ ।।

Due to his pious activities in previous lives, the conditioned soul attains material facilities in this life, but when they are finished, he takes shelter of wealth and riches, which cannot help him in this life or the next. Because of this, he approaches the living dead who possess these things. Such people are compared to impure trees, creepers and poisonous wells. ।। 5-14-12 ।।

english translation

पूर्वजन्मों में पवित्र कर्मों के कारण बद्ध-आत्मा को इस जीवन में भौतिक सुविधाएँ प्राप्त होती हैं, किन्तु इनके समाप्त हो जाने पर वह ऐसी सम्पदा तथा धन का सहारा लेता है, जो न तो इस जीवन में न ही अगले जीवन में उसके सहायक होते हैं। इसलिए वह जीवित मृत-तुल्य मनुष्यों का जिन के पास ये वस्तुएं होती है, सहारा लेना चाहता है। ऐसे लोग अपवित्र वृक्षों, लताओं और विषैले कुओं के सदृश हैं। ।। ५-१४-१२ ।।

sa yadA dugdhapUrvasukRtastadA kAraskarakAkatuNDAdyapuNyadrumalatAviSodapAnavadubhayArthazUnyadraviNAn jIvanmRtAn svayaM jIvan mriyamANa upadhAvati || 5-14-12 ||
