यावन्मनो रजसा पूरुषस्य सत्त्वेन वा तमसा वानुरुद्धम् । चेतोभिराकूतिभिरातनोति निरङ्कुशं कुशलं चेतरं वा ॥ ५-११-४ ॥
As long as the mind of the living entity is contaminated by the three modes of material nature (goodness, passion and ignorance), his mind is exactly like an independent, uncontrolled elephant. It simply expands its jurisdiction of pious and impious activities by using the senses. The result is that the living entity remains in the material world to enjoy and suffer pleasures and pains due to material activity. ॥ 5-11-4 ॥

जब तक जीवात्मा का मन तीन गुणों (सतो, रजो तथा तमोगुणों) से दूषित रहता है, तब तक वह स्वच्छन्द, अनियंत्रित हाथी के समान रहता है। वह इन्द्रियों का उपयोग करके शुभ तथा अशुभ कर्मों के क्षेत्र को केवल बृहत्तर बनाता है। परिणाम यह निकलता है कि जीवात्मा इस संसार में भौतिक कर्मों के कारण मात्र सुख तथा दुख का अनुभव करता है। ॥ ५-११-४ ॥
