एतावान् साङ्ख्ययोगाभ्यां स्वधर्मपरिनिष्ठया । जन्मलाभः परः पुंसामन्ते नारायणस्मृतिः ॥ २-१-६ ॥
The highest perfection of human life, achieved either by complete knowledge of matter and spirit, by practice of mystic powers, or by perfect discharge of occupational duty, is to remember the Personality of Godhead at the end of life. ॥ 2-1-6 ॥

पदार्थ तथा आत्मा के पूर्ण ज्ञान से, योगशक्ति से या स्वधर्म का भलीभाँति पालन करने से मानव जीवन की जो सर्वोच्च सिद्धि प्राप्त की जा सकती है, वह है जीवन के अन्त में भगवान् का स्मरण करना। ॥ २-१-६ ॥

प्रायेण मुनयो राजन् निवृत्ता विधिषेधतः । नैर्गुण्यस्था रमन्ते स्म गुणानुकथने हरेः ॥ २-१-७ ॥
O King Parīkṣit, mainly the topmost transcendentalists, who are above the regulative principles and restrictions, take pleasure in describing the glories of the Lord. ॥ 2-1-7 ॥

हे राजा परीक्षित, मुख्यतया सर्वोच्च अध्यात्मवादी, जो विधि-विधानों एवं प्रतिबन्धों से ऊपर हैं, भगवान् का गुणगान करने में आनन्द का अनुभव करते हैं। ॥ २-१-७ ॥

At the end of the Dvāpara-yuga, I studied this great supplement of Vedic literature named Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, which is equal to all the Vedas, from my father, Śrīla Dvaipāyana Vyāsadeva. ॥ 2-1-8 ॥

द्वापर युग के अन्त में अपने पिता श्रील द्वैपायन व्यासदेव से मैंने श्रीमद्भागवत नाम के इस महान् वैदिक साहित्य के अनुपूरक ग्रंथ का अध्ययन किया, जो समस्त वेदों के तुल्य है। ॥ २-१-८ ॥

परिनिष्ठितोऽपि नैर्गुण्य उत्तमश्लोकलीलया । गृहीतचेता राजर्षे आख्यानं यदधीतवान् ॥ २-१-९ ॥
O saintly King, I was certainly situated perfectly in transcendence, yet I was still attracted by the delineation of the pastimes of the Lord, who is described by enlightened verses. ॥ 2-1-9 ॥

हे राजर्षि, मैं दृढ़तापूर्वक अध्यात्म में पूर्ण रूप से स्थित था तथापि मैं उन भगवान् की लीलाओं के वर्णन के प्रति आकृष्ट हुआ, जिनका वर्णन उत्तम श्लोकों द्वारा किया जाता है। ॥ २-१-९ ॥

तदहं तेऽभिधास्यामि महापौरुषिको भवान् । यस्य श्रद्दधतामाशु स्यान्मुकुन्दे मतिः सती ॥ २-१-१० ॥
That very Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam I shall recite before you because you are the most sincere devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa. One who gives full attention and respect to hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam achieves unflinching faith in the Supreme Lord, the giver of salvation. ॥ 2-1-10 ॥

मैं उसी श्रीमद्भागवत को आपको सुनाने जा रहा हूँ, क्योंकि आप भगवान् कृष्ण के अत्यन्त निष्ठावान भक्त हैं। जो व्यक्ति श्रीमद्भागवत को पूरे मनोयोग से तथा सम्मानपूर्वक सुनता है, उसे मोक्षदायक परमेश्वर की अविचल श्रद्धा प्राप्त होती है। ॥ २-१-१० ॥
