The word Gāyatrī means that which saves the reciter from downfall. Only a person of purified soul can save others, just as only a rich man can donate anything to others.

The one who chants the Gāyatrī mantra is protected from all dangers, and that mantra is known as the Gāyatrī. A person who recites the Gāyatrī mantra with purity is called a pure Brahmana. Therefore, in all acts such as charity, chanting, sacrifices, and worship, one should always be devoted.
In order to perform charity and offer protection, the recipient must be a Brahmana. The recipient should be one who is hungry, as well as a person whose body and soul are aligned with purity—whether they are men or women.
An excellent brahmin must be invited on an auspicious occasion and given sufficient sums of money with piety and pleasing words. They accord all desired results.
