सूत उवाच ॥ अयमेव मयाऽकारि प्रश्नो व्यासाय धीमते ॥ ततः सर्वपुराणानां मया निर्वचनं श्रुतम् ॥ १३६ ॥
Sūta said:— This question was put by me to the intelligent Vyāsa. From him the definitions of the Purāṇas were heard by me.
english translation
एवं व्याससमुत्पन्नः सत्यवत्यां पराशरात् ॥ पुराणसंहिताश्चक्रे महाभारतमुत्तमम् ॥ १३७ ॥
Thus was Vyāsa born of Satyavatī and Parāśara. He composed the excellent Mahābhārata and the Purāṇa Saṃhitās.
english translation
पराशरेण संयोगः पुनः शन्तनुना यथा ॥ सत्यवत्या इव ब्रह्मन्नः संशयितुमर्हसि ॥ १३८ ॥
O brahmin, you shall not entertain a doubt as to why Satyavatī had sexual intercourse with Parāśara and Śantanu.
english translation
सकारणेयमुत्पत्तिः कथिताश्चर्य्यकारिणी ॥ महतां चरिते चैव गुणा ग्राह्या विचक्षणैः ॥ १३९ ॥
This wondrous birth has sufficient reasons behind it. In the story of great men the good qualities shall be grasped by the intelligent people.
english translation
इदं रहस्यं परमं यः शृणोति पठत्यपि ॥ स सर्वपापनिर्मुक्त ऋषिलोके महीयते॥ १४०॥
He who reads or listens to this great secret is rid of all sins and is honoured in the world of sages.
