मुनय ऊचुः॥ व्यासोत्पत्तिं महाबुद्धे ब्रूहि सूत दयानिधे ॥ कृपया परया स्वामिन्कृतार्थान्निष्कुरु प्रभो ॥ १ ॥

The sages said:- O greatly intelligent charioteer treasure of mercy tell me the origin of Vyasa O master, by your supreme mercy, please bring me out of my fulfillment.

व्यासस्य जननी प्रोक्ता नाम्ना सत्यवती शुभा ॥ विवाहिता तु सा देवी राज्ञा शन्तनुना किल ॥ २ ॥

The auspicious Satyavati is said to be the mother of Vyasa The goddess was married to King Shantanu.

vyAsasya jananI proktA nAmnA satyavatI zubhA ॥ vivAhitA tu sA devI rAjJA zantanunA kila ॥ 2 ॥

तस्यां जातो महायोगी कथं व्यासः पराशरात् ॥ सन्देहोऽत्र महाञ्जातस्तं भवाञ्छेत्तुमर्हति ॥ ३ ॥

How did Vyasa, the great yogi, become born of her from Paraśara? There is a great deal of doubt about this and you should cut it off.

सूत उवाच ॥ एकदा तीर्थयात्रायां व्रजन्योगी पराशरः ॥ यदृच्छया गतो रम्यं यमुनायास्तटं शुभम् ॥ ४ ॥

Sūta said:— Once, while he was making his pilgrimage, Parāśara the yogin casually came to the auspicious and beautiful tanks of the Yamunā.

निषादमाह धर्मात्मा कुर्वन्तं भोजनन्तदा ॥ नयस्व यमुनापारं जलयानेन मामरम् ॥ ५ ॥

The righteous soul spoke to the ferryman who was taking his meals “Take me across the Yamunā quickly in your boat”.

niSAdamAha dharmAtmA kurvantaM bhojanantadA ॥ nayasva yamunApAraM jalayAnena mAmaram ॥ 5 ॥
