मुनय ऊचुः ॥ श्रुत्वा शंभोः कथा रम्या नानाख्यानसमन्विता॥ नानावतार संयुक्ता भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदा नृणाम् ॥ १॥
The sages said:— The beautiful episode of Śiva with various incidental anecdotes and narratives of various incarnations, is heard. It yields both worldly pleasures and salvation to men.

munaya UcuH ॥ zrutvA zaMbhoH kathA ramyA nAnAkhyAnasamanvitA॥ nAnAvatAra saMyuktA bhuktimuktipradA nRNAm ॥ 1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइदानीं श्रोतुमिच्छामस्त्वत्तो ब्रह्मविदां वर॥ चरित्रं जगदंबाया भगवत्या मनोहरम्॥ २॥
O foremost among those who know Brahman, we wish to hear from you the beautiful story of the mother of the universe, the goddess.

idAnIM zrotumicchAmastvatto brahmavidAM vara॥ caritraM jagadaMbAyA bhagavatyA manoharam॥ 2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरब्रह्म महेशस्य शक्तिराद्या सनातनी ॥ उमा या समभिख्याता त्रैलोक्यजननी परा ॥ ३॥
The first primordial Śakti of Śiva the great Brahman, who is called Umā, is the great mother of the three worlds.
english translation
parabrahma mahezasya zaktirAdyA sanAtanI ॥ umA yA samabhikhyAtA trailokyajananI parA ॥ 3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसती हेमवती तस्या अवतारद्वयं श्रुतम्॥ अपरानवतारांस्त्वं ब्रूहि सूत् महामते ॥ ४॥
Her two incarnations—Satī and Haimavatī, have been heard, O intelligent Sūta. Please mention her other incarnations too.

satI hemavatI tasyA avatAradvayaM zrutam॥ aparAnavatArAMstvaM brUhi sUt mahAmate ॥ 4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptको विरज्येत मतिमान् गुणश्रवणकर्मणि ॥ श्रीमातुर्ज्ञानिनो यानि न त्यजन्ति कदाचन॥ ५॥
Which intelligent man will be reluctant to hear the good attributes of the glorious mother? Wise men never abandon them.

ko virajyeta matimAn guNazravaNakarmaNi ॥ zrImAturjJAnino yAni na tyajanti kadAcana॥ 5॥
