युधिष्ठिर उवाच।। वर्तंते पितरः स्वर्गे केषांचिन्नरके पुनः।। प्राणिनां नियतं चापि कर्मजं फलमुच्यते ।। १६।।

sanskrit

Yudhiṣṭhira said:— Some manes are in the heaven and some are in the hell. The fruit accruing to the living beings is determined by their activity.

english translation

yudhiSThira uvAca|| vartaMte pitaraH svarge keSAMcinnarake punaH|| prANinAM niyataM cApi karmajaM phalamucyate || 16||

तानि श्राद्धानि दत्तानि कथं गच्छन्ति वै पितॄन् ।। कथं शक्तास्तमाहर्त्तुं नरकस्था फलं पुनः ।। १७।।

How do the Śrāddhas go to the manes? How those in the hell can derive the benefit?

english translation

tAni zrAddhAni dattAni kathaM gacchanti vai pitRRn || kathaM zaktAstamAharttuM narakasthA phalaM punaH || 17||

देवा अपि पितॄन्स्वर्गे यजंत इति मे श्रुतम् ।। एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण ब्रवीहि मे ।। १८।।

I have heard that even the gods worship the manes. I wish to hear this. Please mention this in detail.

devA api pitRRnsvarge yajaMta iti me zrutam || etadicchAmyahaM zrotuM vistareNa bravIhi me || 18||

भीष्म उवाच ।। अत्र ते कीर्तयिष्यामि यथा श्रुतमरिन्दम ।। पित्रा मम पुरा गीतं लोकान्तरगतेन वै ।। १९।।

sanskrit

Bhīṣma said:— O suppressor of enemies, in this context, I shall narrate an event as I have heard from my father who had left this world.

bhISma uvAca || atra te kIrtayiSyAmi yathA zrutamarindama || pitrA mama purA gItaM lokAntaragatena vai || 19||

श्राद्धकाले मम पितुर्मया पिंडस्समुद्यतः ।। मत्पिता मम हस्तेन भित्त्वा भूमिमयाचत ।। २०।।

sanskrit

At the time of Śrāddha, the ball of rice for my father was kept ready by me. My father split the ground and requested me to offer the same into his hand.

english translation

zrAddhakAle mama piturmayA piMDassamudyataH || matpitA mama hastena bhittvA bhUmimayAcata || 20||
