शौनक उवाच ।। सगरस्यात्मजा वीराः कथं जाता महाबलाः ।। विक्रांताः षष्टिसाहस्रा विधना केन वा वद ।। १।।

sanskrit

Śaunaka said:— How were the heroic sons of Sagara born? By what means did the sixty thousand of them become valorous?

english translation

zaunaka uvAca || sagarasyAtmajA vIrAH kathaM jAtA mahAbalAH || vikrAMtAH SaSTisAhasrA vidhanA kena vA vada || 1||

सूत उवाच।। द्वे पत्न्यो सगरस्यास्तां तपसा दग्धकिल्विषे।। और्वस्तयोर्वरं प्रादात्तोषितो मुनिसत्तमः ।। २ ।।

sanskrit

Sūta said:— Sagara had two wives. They had wiped off their sins by penance. When Aurva the sage was propitiated by them he granted them a boon.

english translation

sUta uvAca|| dve patnyo sagarasyAstAM tapasA dagdhakilviSe|| aurvastayorvaraM prAdAttoSito munisattamaH || 2 ||

षष्टिपुत्रसहस्राणि एका वव्रे तरस्विनाम्।। एकं वंशकरं त्वेका यथेष्टं वरशालिनी।। ३।।

sanskrit

One of them chose the boon of sixty thousand sons. The other chose one son who would maintain the line of succession in the race.

english translation

SaSTiputrasahasrANi ekA vavre tarasvinAm|| ekaM vaMzakaraM tvekA yatheSTaM varazAlinI|| 3||

तत्रैवागत्य तां लब्ध्वा पुत्राञ्शूरान्बहूंस्तदा ।। सा चैव सुषुवे तुम्बं बीजपूर्वं पृथक्कृतम् ।। ४ ।।

sanskrit

Having received the boon of heroic sons she gave birth to a big gourd of seeds which were separated.

english translation

tatraivAgatya tAM labdhvA putrAJzUrAnbahUMstadA || sA caiva suSuve tumbaM bIjapUrvaM pRthakkRtam || 4 ||

ते सर्वे हि स्वधात्रीभिर्ववृधुश्च यथाक्रमम् ।। घृतपूर्णेषु कुम्भेषु कुमाराः प्रीतिवर्द्धनाः ।। ५ ।।

sanskrit

They were put in jars of ghee and nurtured by nursing maidens. They became princes and enhanced the delight of all.

english translation

te sarve hi svadhAtrIbhirvavRdhuzca yathAkramam || ghRtapUrNeSu kumbheSu kumArAH prItivarddhanAH || 5 ||
