निदाघकाले पानीयं यस्य तिष्ठत्यवारितम् ।। सुदुर्गं विषमं कृच्छ्रं न कदाचिदवाप्यते ।। ६ ।।

sanskrit

If there is plenty of water in the water-base dug by a man, during summer, he never suffers distress or mishaps at any time.

english translation

nidAghakAle pAnIyaM yasya tiSThatyavAritam || sudurgaM viSamaM kRcchraM na kadAcidavApyate || 6 ||

तडागानां च वक्ष्यामि कृतानां ये गुणाः स्मृता ।। त्रिषु लोकेषु सर्वत्र पूजितो यस्तडागवान् ।। ७ ।।

sanskrit

I shall mention the benefits of lakes dug by men. He who has a lake to his credit is honoured in all the three worlds.

english translation

taDAgAnAM ca vakSyAmi kRtAnAM ye guNAH smRtA || triSu lokeSu sarvatra pUjito yastaDAgavAn || 7 ||

अथवा मित्रसदने मैत्रं मित्रार्तिवर्जितम् ।। कीर्तिसंजननं श्रेष्ठं तडागानां निवेशनम् ।। ८।।

sanskrit

Or the digging of lakes is conducive to the advent of fame and attainment of friendship in the abode of the sun but without distressing heat.

english translation

athavA mitrasadane maitraM mitrArtivarjitam || kIrtisaMjananaM zreSThaM taDAgAnAM nivezanam || 8||

धर्मस्यार्थस्य कामस्य फलमाहुर्मनीषिणः ।। तडागं सुकृते येन तस्य पुण्यमनन्तकम् ।। ९ ।।

sanskrit

He who digs a lake attains an endless merit. The wise say that it is the fruit of virtue, wealth and love.

english translation

dharmasyArthasya kAmasya phalamAhurmanISiNaH || taDAgaM sukRte yena tasya puNyamanantakam || 9 ||

चतुर्विधानां भूतानां तडागः परमाश्रयः ।। तडागादीनि सर्वाणि दिशन्ति श्रियमुत्तमाम् ।। १० ।।

sanskrit

The lake is the greatest resort of the four classes of living beings. The construction of the lake etc. indicates excellent glory.

english translation

caturvidhAnAM bhUtAnAM taDAgaH paramAzrayaH || taDAgAdIni sarvANi dizanti zriyamuttamAm || 10 ||
