ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ त्वयि देवमुने याते पार्वती हृष्टमानसा ॥ तपस्साध्यं हरं मेने तपोर्थं मन आदधे ॥ १ ॥
Brahmā said: After your departure, O celestial sage, convinced that Śiva could be achieved by means of penance, Pārvatī became glad and decided to perform penance.

ततः सख्यौ समादाय जयां च विजयां तथा॥ मातरं पितरं चैव सखीभ्यां पर्यपृच्छत ॥२॥
She took her maids Jayā and Vijayā into confidence and through them made her parents acquainted.

प्रथमं पितरं गत्वा हिमवन्तं नगेश्वरम् ॥ पर्यपृच्छत्सुप्रणम्य विनयेन समन्विता ॥ ३ ॥
First she wanted her father Himavat, the lord of mountains, to hear her humble words.

सख्यावूचतुः ॥ हिमवञ्च्छ्रूयतां पुत्री वचनं कथ्यतेऽधुना ॥ सा स्वयं चैव देहस्य रूपस्यापि तथा पुनः ॥ ४ ॥
The maids said: O Himavat, let the words of your daughter be heard through us. She wishes to make her body, beauty and family fruitful.

भवतो हि कुलस्यास्य साफल्यं कर्तुमिच्छति ॥ तपसा साधनीयोऽसौ नान्यथा दृश्यतां व्रजेत् ॥५॥
He (the Divine) indeed desires to bring about the fulfillment of this noble lineage of yours. That can be achieved only through penance — not by any other means. Let this be understood and pursued.
