दातुः परीक्षा दुर्भिक्षे रणे शूरस्य जायते ।। आपत्काले तु मित्रस्याशक्तौ स्त्रीणां कुलस्य हि ।। १२ ।।

sanskrit

The test of a donor is at the time of famine; the test of a warrior is at the time of battle; the test of a friend is at the time of adversity and the test of a woman is in the financial weakness of the family.

english translation

dAtuH parIkSA durbhikSe raNe zUrasya jAyate || ApatkAle tu mitrasyAzaktau strINAM kulasya hi || 12 ||
