ततस्स पुरुषश्शंभुं प्रणम्य परमेश्वरम् ॥ नामानि कुरु मे स्वामिन्वद कर्मं जगाविति ॥४१॥
He bowed to Śiva Parameśvara and said—“O lord give me names and assign me my task.”
english translation
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनम्प्राह शंकरः प्रहसन्प्रभुः ॥ पुरुषं तं महेशानो वाचा मेघगभीरया॥४२॥
On hearing it Lord Śiva laughed. With words thunderlike in resonance, Lord Śiva addressed the person thus.
english translation
शिव उवाच॥ विष्ण्वितिव्यापकत्वात्ते नाम ख्यातं भविष्यति॥ बहून्यन्यानि नामानि भक्तसौख्यकराणि ह ॥४३॥
Śiva said: “You will be famous as Viṣṇu by name as you are all-pervasive. You will have many other names conferring happiness on devotees.
english translation
तपः कुरु दृढो भूत्वा परमं कार्यसाधनम् ॥ इत्युक्त्वा श्वासमार्गेण ददौ च निगमं ततः ॥४४॥
Perform penance highly conducive to the achivement of the matter in hand, Be firm in it.” Saying so, the lord bestowed on him the Vedas through his nostrils.
english translation
ततोऽच्युतश्शिवं नत्वा चकार विपुलं तपः ॥ अंतर्द्धानं गतश्शक्त्या सलोकः परमेश्वरः ॥४९॥
Śiva vanished accompanied by Śakti and his attendants. After due obeisance to Śiva, Viṣṇu began his great penance.
