नारद उवाच ॥ ब्रह्मन् शंभुवर प्राज्ञ सम्यगुक्तं त्वयानघ ॥ शिवाशिवचरित्रं च पावितं जन्म मे हितम् ॥ १ ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, the sinless and the intelligent one, you have splendidly narrated the story of Śivā and Śiva. My life has been sanctified. This is conducive to my benefit.
english translation
nArada uvAca ॥ brahman zaMbhuvara prAjJa samyaguktaM tvayAnagha ॥ zivAzivacaritraM ca pAvitaM janma me hitam ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइदानीं वद दक्षस्तु तपः कृत्वा दृढव्रतः ॥ कं वरं प्राप देव्यास्तु कथं सा दक्षजाऽभवत् ॥ २ ॥
Now please tell me, what the boon was that Dakṣa, with steady sacred rites and austere penance, secured from the Goddess, and how she became Dakṣa’s daughter.
english translation
idAnIM vada dakSastu tapaH kRtvA dRDhavrataH ॥ kaM varaM prApa devyAstu kathaM sA dakSajA'bhavat ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptब्रह्मोवाच ॥ शृणु नारद धन्यस्त्वं मुनिभिर्भक्तितोखिलैः ॥ यथा तेपे तपो दक्षो वरं प्राप च सुव्रतः ॥ ३ ॥
Brahmā said: O Nārada, listen. You are blessed. You are revered by all sages with devotion. Hear how with good sacred rites, Dakṣa performed penance and secured boons.
english translation
brahmovAca ॥ zRNu nArada dhanyastvaM munibhirbhaktitokhilaiH ॥ yathA tepe tapo dakSo varaM prApa ca suvrataH ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमदाज्ञप्तस्सुधीर्दक्षस्समाधाय महाधिपः ॥ अपाद्यष्टुं च तां देवीं तत्कामो जगदंबिकाम् ॥ ४ ॥
At my bidding, the intelligent Dakṣa the great chief controlled his mind and went to worship the Goddess, the mother of the universe, with that cherished desire.

madAjJaptassudhIrdakSassamAdhAya mahAdhipaH ॥ apAdyaSTuM ca tAM devIM tatkAmo jagadaMbikAm ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptक्षीरोदोत्तरतीरस्थां तां कृत्वा हृदयस्थिताम् ॥ तपस्तप्तुं समारेभे द्रुष्टुं प्रत्यक्षतोम्बिकाम् ॥ ५ ॥
He went to the northern shore of the ocean of milk and began to perform the penance, keeping the mother of the universe in his heart. He wished to see the Goddess in person.
