ग्रामाधीशान्समाहूय सर्वान्स विषयस्थितान् ।। इत्थमाज्ञापयामास दीपा देयाश्शिवालये ।।५६।।

He called headmen of the villages in his kingdom and asked them to furnish all temples of Śiva with lamps.

grAmAdhIzAnsamAhUya sarvAnsa viSayasthitAn || itthamAjJApayAmAsa dIpA deyAzzivAlaye ||56||

अन्यथा सत्यमेवेदं स मे दण्ड्यो भविष्यति ।। दीप दानाच्छिवस्तुष्टो भवतीति श्रुतीरितम् ।। ५७ ।।

He warned them that if they defaulted they would be punished. It is declared in the Vedas that Śiva is delighted at the gift of a lamp to his temples.

anyathA satyamevedaM sa me daNDyo bhaviSyati || dIpa dAnAcchivastuSTo bhavatIti zrutIritam || 57 ||

यस्ययस्याभितो ग्रामं यावतश्च शिवालयाः।। तत्रतत्र सदा दीपो द्योतनीयोऽविचारितम् ।।५८।।

Therefore, you headmen shall see that the temples of Śiva in your jurisdiction are properly illuminated with lamps. There is no question of hesitation in this matter.

yasyayasyAbhito grAmaM yAvatazca zivAlayAH|| tatratatra sadA dIpo dyotanIyo'vicAritam ||58||

ममाज्ञाभंगदोषेण शिरश्छेत्स्याम्यसंशयम्।। इति तद्भयतो दीपा दीप्ताः प्रतिशिवालयम् ।। ५९ ।।

Undoubtedly I shall get the defaulter beheaded. Thus for fear of him every temple was duly illuminated.

mamAjJAbhaMgadoSeNa zirazchetsyAmyasaMzayam|| iti tadbhayato dIpA dIptAH pratizivAlayam || 59 ||

अनेनैव स धर्मेण यावज्जीवं दमो नृपः ।। धर्मर्द्धिं महतीं प्राप्य कालधर्मवशं गतः ।।2.1.18.६०।।

With this act of piety alone, as long as he lived, the king Dama acquired ample prosperity. Finally he passed away.
