वृद्धब्राह्मण उवाच॥ देहि भिक्षां दानवेन्द्र मह्यं प्राप्ताय सांप्रतम् ॥ १६ ॥
The aged brahmin said: O lord of Dānavas, give me the alms for which I have come to you.
english translation
नेदानीं कथयिष्यामि प्रकटं दीनवत्सलम् ॥ पश्चात्त्वां कथयिष्यामि पुनस्सत्यं करिष्यसि ॥ १७ ॥
I shall not say openly what I wish to have from you who are favourably disposed to the distressed. I shall tell you when you have promised me first.
english translation
ओमित्युवाच राजेन्द्रः प्रसन्नवदनेक्षणः ॥ कवचार्थी जनश्चाहमित्युवाचेति सच्छलात् ॥ १८ ॥
With face and eyes indicating pleasure the king replied affirmatively. Then the deceptive Viṣṇu in the form of a brahmin said—“I am the suppliant for your armour.”
english translation
तच्छ्रुत्वा दानवेन्द्रोसौ ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवाग्विभुः ॥ तद्ददौ कवचं दिव्यं विप्राय प्राणसंमतम् ॥१९॥
On hearing that, the lord of Dānavas, a well wisher of the brahmins and of truthful word handed over the divine armour, his vital breath, to the brahmin.
english translation
मायायेत्थं तु कवचं तस्माज्जग्राह वै हरिः ॥ शङ्खचूडस्य रूपेण जगाम तुलसीं प्रति ॥ 2-5-40-२० ॥
Viṣṇu thus snatched off his armour by means of deception. Then in the guise of Śaṅkhacūḍa Viṣṇu approached Tulasī.
