ब्रह्मोवाच ।। चरितं शृणु वक्ष्यामि शशिमौलेस्तु नारद ।। गुहजन्मकथां दिव्यां तारकासुरसद्वधम् ।।६।।

Brahmā said: O Nārada, listen to the tale of Śiva, the moon-crested lord. I shall narrate the story of Guha’s birth and the slaying of the demon Tāraka.

brahmovAca || caritaM zRNu vakSyAmi zazimaulestu nArada || guhajanmakathAM divyAM tArakAsurasadvadham ||6||

श्रूयतां कथयाम्यद्य कथां पापप्रणाशिनीम् ।। यां श्रुत्वा सर्वपापेभ्यो मुच्यते मानवो ध्रुवम् ।।७।।

Let it be heard. I shall tell you the story that destroys all sins, on hearing which a man is freed from all sins.

english translation

zrUyatAM kathayAmyadya kathAM pApapraNAzinIm || yAM zrutvA sarvapApebhyo mucyate mAnavo dhruvam ||7||

इदमाख्यानमनघं रहस्यं परमाद्भुतम् ।। पापसंतापहरणं सर्वविघ्नविनाशनम् ।। ८ ।।

This narrative is sinless. It is a wonderful secret. It dispels the distress caused by sin and wards off all obstacles.

english translation

idamAkhyAnamanaghaM rahasyaM paramAdbhutam || pApasaMtApaharaNaM sarvavighnavinAzanam || 8 ||

सर्वमंगलदं सारं सर्वश्रुतिमनोहरम् ।। सुखदं मोक्षबीजं च कर्ममूलनिकृंतनम् ।। ९ ।।

It bestows everything auspicious. It is the essence of the Vedas and is pleasing to the ears. It is conducive to happiness. It is the cause of liberation and cuts off the roots of all actions.

sarvamaMgaladaM sAraM sarvazrutimanoharam || sukhadaM mokSabIjaM ca karmamUlanikRMtanam || 9 ||

कैलासमागत्य शिवां विवाह्य शोभां प्रपेदे नितरां शिवोऽपि ।। विचारयामास च देवकृत्यं पीडां जनस्यापि च देवकृत्ये ।।2.4.1.१०।।

Returning to Kailāsa after marrying Pārvatī, Śiva attained added lustre. He thought over the task of the gods and the pain of the people involved in the fulfilment of that task.

kailAsamAgatya zivAM vivAhya zobhAM prapede nitarAM zivo'pi || vicArayAmAsa ca devakRtyaM pIDAM janasyApi ca devakRtye ||2.4.1.10||
