ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ सूतसूत महाभाग व्यासशिष्य नमोस्तु ते ॥ श्राविताद्याद्भुता शैवकथा परमपावनी ॥ १ ॥
The sages said: O Sūta the fortunate, O Sūta the disciple of Vyāsa, obeisance be to you. This wonderfully sanctifying story of Śiva has been narrated to-day.
english translation
RSaya UcuH ॥ sUtasUta mahAbhAga vyAsaziSya namostu te ॥ zrAvitAdyAdbhutA zaivakathA paramapAvanI ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत्राद्भुता महादिव्या लिंगोत्पत्तिः श्रुता शुभा ॥ श्रुत्वा यस्याः प्रभावं च दुःखनाशो भवेदिह॥२॥
The wonderful and highly divine origin of the liṅga has been heard. Listening to its efficacy causes destruction of misery.
english translation
tatrAdbhutA mahAdivyA liMgotpattiH zrutA zubhA ॥ zrutvA yasyAH prabhAvaM ca duHkhanAzo bhavediha॥2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptब्रह्मनारदसंवादमनुसृत्य दयानिधे॥ शिवार्चनविधिं ब्रूहि येन तुष्टो भवेच्छिवः ॥३॥
O store house of mercy, please tell us the mode of the worship of Śiva, in accordance with the conversation of Brahmā and Nārada whereby Śiva becomes satisfied

brahmanAradasaMvAdamanusRtya dayAnidhe॥ zivArcanavidhiM brUhi yena tuSTo bhavecchivaH ॥3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियैर्वैश्यैः शूद्रैर्वा पूज्यते शिवः॥ कथं कार्यं च तद् ब्रूहि यथा व्यासमुखाच्छ्रुतम् ॥ ४ ॥
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiṣyas and Śudras worship Śiva. How shall the worship be performed? Please tell us in accordance with what you have heard from Vyāsa.

brAhmaNaiH kSatriyairvaizyaiH zUdrairvA pUjyate zivaH॥ kathaM kAryaM ca tad brUhi yathA vyAsamukhAcchrutam ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तेषां शर्मदं श्रुतिसंमतम्॥ उवाच सकलं प्रीत्या मुनि प्रश्नानुसारतः ॥ ५ ॥
On hearing their words, Sūta narrated everything in answer to the question of the sages, everything conducive to welfare and in accordance with the Vedas.

tacchrutvA vacanaM teSAM zarmadaM zrutisaMmatam॥ uvAca sakalaM prItyA muni praznAnusArataH ॥ 5 ॥
