विश्वोद्भवस्थितिलयादिषु हेतुमेकं गौरीपर्तिविदिततत्त्वमनन्तकीर्तिम् ।। मायाश्रयम्विगतमायमचिंत्यरूपम्बोधस्वरूपममलं हि शिवन्नमामि ।। १ ।।

sanskrit

I bow to Śiva the consort of Gaurī, the sole cause of the origin, sustenance, dissolution of the universe, who has understood the reality, who is of endless renown, who is the support of Māyā but is free from its influence, whose form is incomprehensible, who is unsullied and who is perfect knowledge itself.

english translation

vizvodbhavasthitilayAdiSu hetumekaM gaurIpartividitatattvamanantakIrtim || mAyAzrayamvigatamAyamaciMtyarUpambodhasvarUpamamalaM hi zivannamAmi || 1 ||

hk transliteration

वन्दे शिवन्तम्प्रकृतेरनादिम्प्रशान्तमेकम्पुरुषोत्तमं हि ।। स्वमायया कृत्स्नमिदं हि सृष्ट्वा नभोवदन्तर्बहिरास्थितो यः ।।२ ।।

sanskrit

I salute Śiva who is prior to Prakṛti, who is calm and tranquil, the only excellent Puruṣa, who has created this visible universe and who stays both within and without like ether.

english translation

vande zivantamprakRteranAdimprazAntamekampuruSottamaM hi || svamAyayA kRtsnamidaM hi sRSTvA nabhovadantarbahirAsthito yaH ||2 ||

hk transliteration

वन्देतरस्थं निजगूढरूपं शिवंस्वतस्स्रष्टुमिदम्विचष्टे ।। जगन्ति नित्यम्परितो भ्रमंति यत्सन्निधौ चुम्बकलोहवत्तम् ।। ३ ।।

sanskrit

I salute Śiva, of unmanifest form, who having extended himself by way of creation stands in the middle of it while the worlds move around him like iron filings round the magnet.

english translation

vandetarasthaM nijagUDharUpaM zivaMsvatassraSTumidamvicaSTe || jaganti nityamparito bhramaMti yatsannidhau cumbakalohavattam || 3 ||

hk transliteration

व्यास उवाच ।। जगतः पितरं शम्भुञ्जगतो मातरं शिवाम् ।। तत्पुत्रश्च गणाधीशन्नत्वैतद्वर्णयामहे ।।४।।

sanskrit

Vyāsa said: I describe this after bowing to Śambhu, the father of the universe, Śivā the mother of the universe and Gaṇādhīśa their son.

english translation

vyAsa uvAca || jagataH pitaraM zambhuJjagato mAtaraM zivAm || tatputrazca gaNAdhIzannatvaitadvarNayAmahe ||4||

hk transliteration

एकदा मुनयस्सर्वे नैमिषारण्य वासिनः ।। पप्रच्छुर्वरया भक्त्या सूतन्ते शौनकादयः ।। ५ ।।

sanskrit

Once Śaunaka and other sages living in Naimiṣa forest asked Sūta with full devotion.

english translation

ekadA munayassarve naimiSAraNya vAsinaH || papracchurvarayA bhaktyA sUtante zaunakAdayaH || 5 ||
