अथ सा द्विजपत्नी हि ब्रह्मचर्य्यव्रतान्विता ॥ पार्थिवार्चनपूर्वं हि तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥ ६ ॥
Then the brahmin widow, observing the rite of celibacy performed a severe penance by worshipping Śiva’s earthen phallic image.
english translation
atha sA dvijapatnI hi brahmacaryyavratAnvitA ॥ pArthivArcanapUrvaM hi tapastepe sudAruNam ॥ 6 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्मिन्नवसरे दुष्टो मूढनामाऽसुरो बली ॥ ययौ तत्र महामायी कामबाणेन ताडितः ॥ ७॥
In the meantime, a wicked and very powerful Asura named Mūḍha came there. He, the wielder of great Māyā, was struck by the arrows of the cupid.
english translation
tasminnavasare duSTo mUDhanAmA'suro balI ॥ yayau tatra mahAmAyI kAmabANena tADitaH ॥ 7॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतपन्तीं तां समालोक्य सुन्दरीमतिकामिनीम् ॥ तया भोगं ययाचे स नानालोभं प्रदर्शयन् ॥ ८ ॥
On seeing that charming beautiful lady performing penance, he offered her many temptations and requested for sexual pleasure with her.
english translation
tapantIM tAM samAlokya sundarImatikAminIm ॥ tayA bhogaM yayAce sa nAnAlobhaM pradarzayan ॥ 8 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअथ सा सुव्रता नारी शिवध्यानपरायणा ॥ तस्मिन्दृष्टिं दधौ नैव कामदृष्ट्या मुनीश्वराः ॥ ९ ॥
O great sages, the lady obeserving holy rites and engrossed in Śiva’s meditation did not cast a loving glance at him.
english translation
atha sA suvratA nArI zivadhyAnaparAyaNA ॥ tasmindRSTiM dadhau naiva kAmadRSTyA munIzvarAH ॥ 9 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptन मानितवती तं च ब्राह्मणी सा तपोरता ॥ अतीव हि तपोनिष्ठासीच्छिवध्यानमाश्रिता ॥ १० ॥
She did not honour him. Engaged in penance she remained meditating upon Śiva and strictly continued her penance.
english translation
na mAnitavatI taM ca brAhmaNI sA taporatA ॥ atIva hi taponiSThAsIcchivadhyAnamAzritA ॥ 10 ॥
