॥ सूत उवाच ॥ श्रुत्वा विष्णुकृतं दिव्यं परनामविभूषितम् ॥ सहस्रनामस्वस्तोत्रं प्रसन्नोऽभून्महेश्वरः ॥ १ ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing the eulogy made by Viṣṇu consisting of the hymn of his thousand divine names lord Śiva became delighted.
english translation
॥ sUta uvAca ॥ zrutvA viSNukRtaM divyaM paranAmavibhUSitam ॥ sahasranAmasvastotraM prasanno'bhUnmahezvaraH ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरीक्षार्थं हरेरीशः कमलेषु महेश्वरः ॥ गोपयामास कमलं तदैकं भुवनेश्वरः ॥ २ ॥
In order to test Viṣṇu, Śiva, the lord of the worlds concealed one of the lotus-flowers.
english translation
parIkSArthaM harerIzaH kamaleSu mahezvaraH ॥ gopayAmAsa kamalaM tadaikaM bhuvanezvaraH ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपंकजेषु तदा तेषु सहस्रेषु बभूव च ॥ न्यूनमेकं तदा विष्णुर्विह्वलश्शिवपूजने ॥ ३ ॥
There was a shortage of one lotus-flower from among the thousand lotuses. Hence Viṣṇu was distressed in the course of his worship of Śiva.
english translation
paMkajeSu tadA teSu sahasreSu babhUva ca ॥ nyUnamekaM tadA viSNurvihvalazzivapUjane ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptहृदा विचारितं तेन कुतो वै कमलं गतम् ॥ यातं यातु सुखेनैव मन्नेत्रं कमलं न किम् ॥ ४ ॥
He thought within himself “Where could the lotus-flower have gone? If it has gone, let it go for good. Is not my own eye a lotus?
english translation
hRdA vicAritaM tena kuto vai kamalaM gatam ॥ yAtaM yAtu sukhenaiva mannetraM kamalaM na kim ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptज्ञात्वेति नेत्रमुद्धृत्य सर्वसत्त्वावलम्बनात् ॥ पूजयामास भावेन स्तवयामास तेन च ॥ ५ ॥
After thinking thus, he plucked out his eye and repeated the last name Sarvasattvāvalambana. Full of emotion he worshipped and eulogised Śiva.
english translation
jJAtveti netramuddhRtya sarvasattvAvalambanAt ॥ pUjayAmAsa bhAvena stavayAmAsa tena ca ॥ 5 ॥
