तं दृष्ट्वा सा सुदेहा हि मनसि ज्वलिता तदा ॥ अत्यन्तं दुःखमापन्ना हा हतास्मीति वादिनी ॥ ६॥
On seeing that, Sudehā blazed furiously in her mind. Extremely distressed she began to lament, “O I am doomed.”
english translation
सुधर्म्मा गृहमागत्य वधूं पुत्रं विवाहितम् ॥ उत्साहं दर्शयामास प्रियाभ्यां हर्षयन्निव ॥ ७ ॥
When the daughter-in-law came to the house and the son was duly married, Sudharmā evinced his enthusiasm to both the wives with an intention of delighting them equally.
english translation
अभवद्धर्षिता घुष्मा सुदेहा दुःखमागता ॥ न सहंती सुखं तच्च दुःखं कृत्वापतद्भुवि ॥ ८॥
But Ghuśmā was delighted and Sudehā was distressed. Unable to bear her happiness, she fell on the ground.
english translation
घुश्माऽवदद्वधूपुत्रौ त्वदीयौ न मदीयकौ ॥ वधूः पुत्रश्च तां प्रीत्या प्रसूं श्वश्रममन्यत ॥ ९ ॥
Ghuśmā said:— “These are your own son and daughter-in-law not mine.” But the daughter-in-law considered Sudehā her mother-in-law and the son considered her his mother.
english translation
भर्त्ता प्रियां तां ज्येष्ठां च मेने नैव कनिष्ठिकाम् ॥ तथापि सा तदा ज्येष्ठा स्वान्तर्मलवती ह्यभूत् ॥ १० ॥
The husband too loved the elder more than he loved the younger. Still the elder wife retained dirt in her mind.
