यथापूर्वं स्थले लोके भयं चासीन्निरन्तरम्।। तथा भयं जले तेषामासीन्नित्यं मुनीश्वराः।। ३६।।

O great sages, the people had the terror in the waters now incessantly in the manner they had fear on land before.

english translation

yathApUrvaM sthale loke bhayaM cAsInnirantaram|| tathA bhayaM jale teSAmAsInnityaM munIzvarAH|| 36||

कदाचिद्राक्षसी सा च निस्सृता नगराज्जले।। रुद्ध्वा मार्गं स्थिता लोकपीडार्थं धरणौ च हि।। ३७।।

Sometimes the Rākṣasī came out of the city in the water and blocked the path to the land in order to harass the people.

एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र नावो बहुतराः शुभाः।। आगता बहुधा तत्र सर्वतो लोकसंवृताः।। ३८।।

In the meantime several beautiful boats arrived there all full of people.

english translation

etasminnaMtare tatra nAvo bahutarAH zubhAH|| AgatA bahudhA tatra sarvato lokasaMvRtAH|| 38||

ता नावश्च तदा दृष्ट्वा हर्षं संप्राप्य राक्षसाः।। द्रुतं गत्वा हि तत्रस्थान्वेगात्संदध्रिरे खलाः।। ३९।।

On seeing those boats the wicked Rākṣasas were delighted much. Rushing at the people on board they bound them forcefully.

tA nAvazca tadA dRSTvA harSaM saMprApya rAkSasAH|| drutaM gatvA hi tatrasthAnvegAtsaMdadhrire khalAH|| 39||

आजग्मुर्नगरं ते च तानादाय महाबलाः।। चिक्षिपुर्बन्धनागारे बद्ध्वा हि निगडैर्दृढैः।। ४०।।

The naughty Rākṣasas came to the city taking those people with them. They fettered them and put them in prisons.

AjagmurnagaraM te ca tAnAdAya mahAbalAH|| cikSipurbandhanAgAre baddhvA hi nigaDairdRDhaiH|| 40||
