तत्पुत्रोहं भवेयं चेद्धरिं तं पीडयाम्यहम्।। इति कृत्वा मतिं भीमस्तपस्तप्तुं महद्ययौ।। २१।।

If I am the true son of my mother I shall surely harass Viṣṇu. Thinking thus Bhīma went to perform a great penance.

english translation

tatputrohaM bhaveyaM ceddhariM taM pIDayAmyaham|| iti kRtvA matiM bhImastapastaptuM mahadyayau|| 21||

ब्रह्माणां च समुद्दिश्य वर्षाणां च सहस्रकम् ।। मनसा ध्यानमाश्रित्य तपश्चक्रे महत्तदा।। २२।।

With Brahmā as the goal of his meditation he performed a great penance for a thousand years.

english translation

brahmANAM ca samuddizya varSANAM ca sahasrakam || manasA dhyAnamAzritya tapazcakre mahattadA|| 22||

ऊर्ध्वबाहुश्चैकपादस्सूर्य्ये दृष्टिं दधत्पुरा।। संस्थितस्स बभूवाथ भीमो राक्षसपुत्रकः ।। २३।।

He kept his arms lifted up; he stood on a single foot. He fixed his vision at the sun. Bhīma the son of Kumbhakarṇa remained like this.

english translation

UrdhvabAhuzcaikapAdassUryye dRSTiM dadhatpurA|| saMsthitassa babhUvAtha bhImo rAkSasaputrakaH || 23||

शिरसस्तस्य संजातं तेजः परमदारुणम् ।। तेन दग्धास्तदा देवा ब्रह्माणं शरणं ययुः ।। २४ ।।

A terrible fiery splendour arose from his head. Scorched by it the gods sought refuge in Brahmā.

english translation

zirasastasya saMjAtaM tejaH paramadAruNam || tena dagdhAstadA devA brahmANaM zaraNaM yayuH || 24 ||

प्रणम्य वेधसं भक्त्या तुष्टुवुर्विविधैः स्तवैः ।। दुःखं निवेदयांचकुर्ब्रह्मणे ते सवासवाः ।। २५ ।।

The gods including Indra bowed to Brahmā with devotion and eulogised him with different hymns. They mentioned their miserable plight to him.

praNamya vedhasaM bhaktyA tuSTuvurvividhaiH stavaiH || duHkhaM nivedayAMcakurbrahmaNe te savAsavAH || 25 ||
