॥ द्विजा ऊचुः ॥ महाकाल महादेव दुष्टदण्डकर प्रभो ॥ मुक्तिं प्रयच्छ नश्शंभो संसारांबुधितश्शिव ॥ ४६ ॥
The brahmins said:— O lord, the chastiser of the wicked, O Śiva, grant us liberation from the ocean of worldly existence. O Śiva.
english translation
अत्रैव लोकरक्षार्थं स्थातव्यं हि त्वया शिव ॥ स्वदर्शकान्नराञ्छम्भो तारय त्वं सदा प्रभो ॥ ४७ ॥
O Śiva, you shall stay here itself for the protection of the people. O lord Śiva, save those who see you.
english translation
सूत उवाच ॥ इत्युक्तस्तैश्शिवस्तत्र तस्थौ गर्ते सुशोभने ॥ भक्तानां चैव रक्षार्थं दत्त्वा तेभ्यश्च सद्गतिम् ॥ ४८॥
Sūta said:— Requested thus, Śiva remained in that auspicious chasm for the protection of his devotees after granting them the goal of the good.
english translation
द्विजास्ते मुक्तिमापन्नाश्चतुर्द्दिक्षु शिवास्पदम् ॥ क्रोशमात्रं तदा जातं लिंगरूपिण एव च ॥ ४९॥
The brahmins attained salvation. The supporting base of Śiva in the form of Liṅga extended to 3 kilometres in each of the four directions.
english translation
महाकालेश्वरो नाम शिवः ख्यातश्च भूतले ॥ तं दृष्ट्वा न भवेत्स्वप्ने किंचिद्दुःखमपि द्विजाः ॥ ५० ॥
O brahmins, Śiva became famous as Mahākāleśvara. On seeing this image no one will have misery even in dreams.
