अथ यावत्स दुष्टात्मा हन्तुमैच्छद्द्विजांश्च तान्।। तावच्च प्रार्थिवस्थाने गर्त्तं आसीत्सशब्दकः।। ३६।।

When the wicked Daitya desired to kill the brahmins, the spot near the Pārthiva idol caved in with a loud report.

atha yAvatsa duSTAtmA hantumaicchaddvijAMzca tAn|| tAvacca prArthivasthAne garttaM AsItsazabdakaH|| 36||

गर्तात्ततस्समुत्पन्नः शिवो विकटरूपधृक् ।। महाकाल इति ख्यातो दुष्टहंता सतां गतिः ।। ३७।।

From the chasm thus created, Śiva rose up assuming a hideous form. He became famous as Mahākāla, the slayer of the wicked and the goal of the good.

gartAttatassamutpannaH zivo vikaTarUpadhRk || mahAkAla iti khyAto duSTahaMtA satAM gatiH || 37||

महाकालस्समुत्पन्नो दुष्टानां त्वादृशामहम्।। खल त्वं ब्राह्मणानां हि समीपाद्दूरतो व्रज।। ३८।।

“I am Mahākāla (the great god of death) risen up against the wicked like you. O sinful one, go away, leave the presence of these brahmins.”

english translation

mahAkAlassamutpanno duSTAnAM tvAdRzAmaham|| khala tvaM brAhmaNAnAM hi samIpAddUrato vraja|| 38||

इत्युक्त्वा हुंकृतेनैव भस्मसात्कृतवांस्तदा।। दूषणं च महाकालः शंकरस्सबलं द्रुतम् ।। ३९ ।।

After saying this Śiva reduced Dūṣaṇa and his army, to ashes immediately with a mere sound of Hum.

ityuktvA huMkRtenaiva bhasmasAtkRtavAMstadA|| dUSaNaM ca mahAkAlaH zaMkarassabalaM drutam || 39 ||

कियत्सैन्यं हतं तेन किंचित्सैन्यं पलायितम्।। दूषणश्च हतस्तेन शिवेनेह परात्मना ।। ४०।।

Dūṣaṇa and a portion of his army too were killed by Śiva the great soul. A part of the army fled.
