कथं च पतितः सोऽत्र ब्राह्मणा ब्रूत सत्यतः ।। ते पृष्टाश्च तदा प्रोचुर्ब्राह्मणाः पण्डितोत्तमाः।। ७१।।

How did it fall down? O brahmins, tell me the truth. Thus asked the brahmins, the excellent scholars, said.

english translation

kathaM ca patitaH so'tra brAhmaNA brUta satyataH || te pRSTAzca tadA procurbrAhmaNAH paNDitottamAH|| 71||

ब्रह्मभोजे महाराज वटुको भोजितः पुरा।। चण्डीपुत्रश्शिवस्तुष्टस्तस्माच्च पतितो ध्वजः।। ७२।।

“O great king, while feasting the brahmins Vaṭuka the son of Caṇḍī was fed at the outset. Śiva was satisfied. Hence the banner fell down.”

english translation

brahmabhoje mahArAja vaTuko bhojitaH purA|| caNDIputrazzivastuSTastasmAcca patito dhvajaH|| 72||

तच्छ्रुत्वा नृपतिस्सोऽथ जनाश्चान्ये ऽपि सर्वशः ।। अभवन्विस्मितास्तत्र प्रशंसां चक्रिरे ततः ।। ७३ ।।

On hearing it, the king and the people were surprised. They praised them.

english translation

tacchrutvA nRpatisso'tha janAzcAnye 'pi sarvazaH || abhavanvismitAstatra prazaMsAM cakrire tataH || 73 ||

एवं च महिमा तेषां वर्द्धितः शङ्करेण हि ।। तस्माच्च वटुकाः श्रेष्ठाः पुरा विद्भिः प्रकीर्तिताः ।। ७४ ।।

Thus the greatness of the Vaṭukas was enhanced by Śiva. The Vaṭukas are glorified as excellent ritualists by those who know things of yore.

evaM ca mahimA teSAM varddhitaH zaGkareNa hi || tasmAcca vaTukAH zreSThAH purA vidbhiH prakIrtitAH || 74 ||

शिवपूजा तु तैः पूर्वमुत्तार्य्या नान्यथा पुनः ।। अन्येषां नाधिकारोऽस्ति शिवस्य वचनादिह ।। ७५ ।।

At first Śiva’s worship shall be performed by the Baṭukas alone. Not otherwise. None else is entitled to the worship as Śiva has said.

zivapUjA tu taiH pUrvamuttAryyA nAnyathA punaH || anyeSAM nAdhikAro'sti zivasya vacanAdiha || 75 ||
