सूत उवाच ॥ एवं तस्मै वरान्दत्तास्सपुत्राय महात्मने ॥ सुदर्शनाय कृपया शिवाभ्यां जगतां कृते ॥ ५६॥
Sūta said:— Thus boons were granted to the noble Sudarśana and his sons by Śiva and Śivā out of pity for the welfare of the worlds.
english translation
sUta uvAca ॥ evaM tasmai varAndattAssaputrAya mahAtmane ॥ sudarzanAya kRpayA zivAbhyAM jagatAM kRte ॥ 56॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशिवाभ्यां स्थापिता यस्मात्तस्मात्तं वटुकाः स्मृताः ॥ तपोभ्रष्टाश्च ये जाताः स्मृतास्तस्मात्तपोधमाः ॥ ५७॥
Because they had been established by Śiva and Śivā they are known as Vaṭukas. Those who neglect penance are known as Tapodhamas.
english translation
zivAbhyAM sthApitA yasmAttasmAttaM vaTukAH smRtAH ॥ tapobhraSTAzca ye jAtAH smRtAstasmAttapodhamAH ॥ 57॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशिवयोः कृपया सर्वे विस्तारं बहुधा गताः ॥ तेषां च प्रथमा पूजा महापूजा महात्मनः ॥ ५८॥
Thanks to the mercy of Śiva and Śivā they expanded in various ways. Their worship at the outset is the great worship of Śiva, the supreme soul.
english translation
zivayoH kRpayA sarve vistAraM bahudhA gatAH ॥ teSAM ca prathamA pUjA mahApUjA mahAtmanaH ॥ 58॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतेन यावत्कृता नैव पूजा वै शंकरस्य च ॥ तावत्पूजा न कर्त्तव्या कृता चेन्न शुभापि सा ॥ ५९ ॥
No worship shall be performed by any person as long as he has not performed Śiva’s worship. If it is performed it does not turn out to be auspicious.
english translation
tena yAvatkRtA naiva pUjA vai zaMkarasya ca ॥ tAvatpUjA na karttavyA kRtA cenna zubhApi sA ॥ 59 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशुभं वाप्यशुभं वापि बटुकं न परित्यजेत् ॥ प्राजापत्ये च भोज्ये वै वटुरेको विशिष्यते ॥ ६० ॥
Whether auspicious or inauspicious, the Vaṭuka is not to be eschewed. In the Prājāpatya rite and at the feast a single Vaṭu is considered excellent.

zubhaM vApyazubhaM vApi baTukaM na parityajet ॥ prAjApatye ca bhojye vai vaTureko viziSyate ॥ 60 ॥
