हन्यमाने बले तस्मिन्पद्मनाभेन पृष्ठतः । माल्वान्सन्निवृत्तो ऽथ वेलामेत्य इवार्णवः ॥ 7-8-1 ॥

When that army was being slaughtered from behind by Padmanabha (the lotus-naveled Vishnu), Malyavan thereupon turned back and stood firm, like the ocean recoiling on reaching the shore.

english translation

संरक्तनयनः कोपाच्चलन्मौलिर्निशाचरः । पद्मनाभमिदं प्राह वचनं पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥ 7-8-2 ॥

His eyes red with rage and his crown trembling, the night-roamer addressed these words to Padmanabha, the Supreme Person:

english translation

नारायण न जानीषे क्षात्रधर्मं पुरातनम् । अयुद्धमनसो भीतानस्मान्हंसि यथेतरः ॥ 7-8-3 ॥

"O Narayana, you do not know the ancient law of the warriors (kshatriya dharma), for you slay us who are frightened and have no mind to fight, as any common man would."

english translation

पराङ्मुखवधं पापं यः करोत्यसुरेतरः । स हन्ता न गतः स्वर्गं लभते पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥ 7-8-4 ॥

"He who, though no asura but one other than an asura, commits the sin of slaying one whose face is turned away in flight — such a slayer does not go to heaven, nor does he obtain the worlds of those who perform meritorious deeds."

english translation

युद्धश्रद्धा ऽथवा ते ऽस्ति शङ्खचक्रगदाधर । 4अहं स्थितो ऽस्मि पश्यामि बलं दर्शय यत्तव ॥ 7-8-5 ॥

"But if you have the will to fight, O bearer of the conch, discus, and mace, here I stand and watch — show me what strength is yours."
