अथाब्रवीन्मुनिं रामः कथं ते भ्रातरो वने । कीदृशं तु तदा ब्रह्मंस्तपस्तेपुर्महाबलाः ॥ 7-10-1 ॥
Then Rama said to the sage: "In what manner, O Brahmin, did your brothers practise austerity in the forest, and what kind of penance did those mighty ones perform at that time?"
english translation
अगस्त्यस्त्वब्रवीत्तत्र रामं सुप्रीतमानसम् । तांस्तान्धर्मविधींस्तत्र भ्रातरस्ते समाविशन् ॥ 7-10-2 ॥
Thereupon Agastya spoke to Rama, whose mind was greatly pleased, telling of the various forms of religious observance into which his brothers there entered.
english translation
कुम्भकर्णस्ततो यत्तो नित्यं धर्मपथे स्थितः । तताप ग्रीष्मकाले तु पञ्चाग्नीन्परितः स्थितः ॥ 7-10-3 ॥
Then Kumbhakarna, ever diligent and steadfast on the path of righteousness, performed austerity in the summer season, standing surrounded by the five fires.
english translation
मेघाम्बुसिक्तो वर्षासु वीरासनमसेवत । नित्यं च शिशिरे काले जलमध्यप्रतिश्रयः ॥ 7-10-4 ॥
During the rains, drenched by the water of the clouds, he kept to the heroic posture; and in the cold season he always made his dwelling in the midst of water.
english translation
एवं वर्षसहस्राणि दश तस्यातिचक्रमुः । धर्मे प्रयतमानस्य सत्पथे निष्ठितस्य च ॥ 7-10-5 ॥
In this way ten thousand years passed for him as he strove in righteousness and remained firmly fixed upon the true path.
