The sentiment called Peace is the essence of tranquillity and the promoter of liberation. It arises from determinants such as true knowledge, detachment, purity of intention, and similar qualities. The consequent actions (anubhāvas) include practices such as restraint, observances, meditation, concentration, devotion, compassion for all beings, and acceptance of the signs of asceticism. Its complementary psychological states (vyabhicāribhāvas) include disgust, memory, firmness, purity at all stages of life, stiffness, horripilation, and so on. Here are the verses associated with the Peace sentiment: "The sentiment called Peace arises from the study of the self, is associated with the purpose of true knowledge, and is taught as the highest good." "It is characterized by the restraint of the mind, the senses, and the organs of action, and by the state of being established in the self. It is for the welfare and happiness of all beings and should be known as the sentiment called Peace." "Where there is no sorrow, no happiness, no hatred, and no envy, where there is equality towards all beings, that is the well-known sentiment of Peace." "The sentiments of Love and the others are modifications, but Peace is considered to be the original state. A modification arises from the original state and again dissolves into it. A sentiment arises from Peace, having attained its own specific cause." "And when the cause is withdrawn, it again dissolves into Peace. Thus the nine sentiments have been seen by those who know drama, endowed with their characteristics."
