पूर्वरङ्गविधिं श्रुत्वापुनराहुर्महत्तमाः । भरतं मुनयः सर्वे प्रश्नान्पञ्चाभिधत्स्व नः ॥ १॥
After listening to the description of the preliminaries (Pūrvaraṅga), all the great sages addressed Bharata and posed five questions to him:

pUrvaraGgavidhiM zrutvApunarAhurmahattamAH । bharataM munayaH sarve praznAnpaJcAbhidhatsva naH ॥ 1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptये रसा इति पठ्यन्ते नाट्ये नाट्यविचक्षणैः । रसत्वं केन वै तेषामेतदाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥ २॥
Those which are described as Rasas in drama by experts in the art of theatre—how do they attain the state of being Rasas? This, you are requested to explain to us.
english translation
ye rasA iti paThyante nATye nATyavicakSaNaiH । rasatvaM kena vai teSAmetadAkhyAtumarhasi ॥ 2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptभावाश्चैव कथं प्रोक्ताः किं वा ते भावयन्त्यपि । संग्रहं कारिकां चैव निरुक्तं चैव तत्त्वतः ॥ ३॥
How are the Psychological States (bhāvas) explained, and what do they bring about? Explain their summary, the verse of definition, and their true meaning in detail.

bhAvAzcaiva kathaM proktAH kiM vA te bhAvayantyapi । saMgrahaM kArikAM caiva niruktaM caiva tattvataH ॥ 3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतेषां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनीनां भरतो मुनिः । प्रत्युवाच पुनर्वाक्यं रसभावविकल्पनम् ॥ ४॥
Hearing the words of the sages, the sage Bharata replied once again, explaining the classification of sentiments (rasas) and psychological states (bhāvas).

teSAM tu vacanaM zrutvA munInAM bharato muniH । pratyuvAca punarvAkyaM rasabhAvavikalpanam ॥ 4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअहं वः कथयिष्यामि निखिलेन तपोधनाः । संग्रहं कारिकां चैव निरुक्तं च यथाक्रमम् ॥ ५॥
"I shall explain to you all in detail, O sages endowed with penance, the summary, the verses, and the precise definitions, in the proper sequence."

ahaM vaH kathayiSyAmi nikhilena tapodhanAH । saMgrahaM kArikAM caiva niruktaM ca yathAkramam ॥ 5॥
