कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य नहुषो नाम पार्थिवः । प्राप्तवान् देवराज्यं हि नयबुद्धिपराक्रमः ॥ १ ॥

After some time, a king named Nahuṣa, renowned for his wisdom in policy, sharp intellect, and extraordinary valor, ascended to the position of the king of the gods.

english translation

kasyacittvatha kAlasya nahuSo nAma pArthivaH | prAptavAn devarAjyaM hi nayabuddhiparAkramaH || 1 ||

hk transliteration

प्रशशास तदा राज्यं देवैर्व्युष्टिमवाप्नुवन् । गान्धर्वं चैअ नाट्यं च दृष्ट्वा चिन्तामुपागमत् ॥ २ ॥

sanskrit

He ruled the kingdom and attained prosperity through the favor of the gods. Upon witnessing the Gandharva and Nāṭya performances, he became contemplative.

english translation

prazazAsa tadA rAjyaM devairvyuSTimavApnuvan | gAndharvaM caia nATyaM ca dRSTvA cintAmupAgamat || 2 ||

स चिन्तयित्वा मनसा कथमेष गृहे मम । नाट्यप्रयोगो हि भवेदिति सादर एव सन् ॥ ३ ॥

sanskrit

Having reflected in his mind on how such a dramatic performance could take place in his own abode, he, with great respect, addressed the king.

english translation

sa cintayitvA manasA kathameSa gRhe mama | nATyaprayogo hi bhavediti sAdara eva san || 3 ||

hk transliteration

कृताञ्जलिः प्रयोगार्थं प्रोक्तवांस्तु सुरान् नृपः । अप्सरोभिरिदं सार्धं नाट्यं भवतु मे गृहे ॥ ४ ॥

sanskrit

With folded hands, the king humbly requested the gods for the performance, saying, "Let this dramatic art, accompanied by the celestial nymphs, be enacted in my abode."

english translation

kRtAJjaliH prayogArthaM proktavAMstu surAn nRpaH | apsarobhiridaM sArdhaM nATyaM bhavatu me gRhe || 4 ||

hk transliteration

प्रत्युक्तश्च ततो देवैर्बृहस्पतिपुरोगमैः । दिव्याङ्गनानां नैवेह मानुषैः सह सङ्गतिः ॥ ५ ॥

sanskrit

Then he was addressed by the gods, led by Bṛhaspati, who said, “There can be no association between divine women and mortal men here.”

english translation

pratyuktazca tato devairbRhaspatipurogamaiH | divyAGganAnAM naiveha mAnuSaiH saha saGgatiH || 5 ||
