एषोऽखिलेनाभिहितो दण्डपारुष्यनिर्णयः । स्तेनस्यातः प्रवक्ष्यामि विधिं दण्डविनिर्णये ॥ ३०१ ॥

Thus the whole law of assault (and hurt) has been declared completely; I will now explain the rules for the decision (in cases) of theft.

english translation

eSo'khilenAbhihito daNDapAruSyanirNayaH | stenasyAtaH pravakSyAmi vidhiM daNDavinirNaye || 301 ||

परमं यत्नमातिष्ठेत् स्तेनानां निग्रहे नृपः । स्तेनानां निग्रहादस्य यशो राष्ट्रं च वर्धते ॥ ३०२ ॥

Let the king exert himself to the utmost to punish thieves; for, if he punishes thieves, his fame grows and his kingdom prospers.

english translation

paramaM yatnamAtiSThet stenAnAM nigrahe nRpaH | stenAnAM nigrahAdasya yazo rASTraM ca vardhate || 302 ||

अभयस्य हि यो दाता स पूज्यः सततं नृपः । सत्त्रं हि वर्धते तस्य सदैवाभयदक्षिणम् ॥ ३०३ ॥

That king, indeed, is ever worthy of honour who ensures the safety (of his subjects); for the sacrificial session (sattra, which he, as it were, performs thereby) ever grows in length, the safety (of his subjects representing) the sacrificial fee

english translation

abhayasya hi yo dAtA sa pUjyaH satataM nRpaH | sattraM hi vardhate tasya sadaivAbhayadakSiNam || 303 ||

सर्वतो धर्मषड्भागो राज्ञो भवति रक्षतः । अधर्मादपि षड्भागो भवत्यस्य ह्यरक्षतः ॥ ३०४ ॥

A king who (duly) protects (his subjects) receives from each and all the sixth part of their spiritual merit; if he does not protect them, the sixth part of their demerit also (will fall on him).

english translation

sarvato dharmaSaDbhAgo rAjJo bhavati rakSataH | adharmAdapi SaDbhAgo bhavatyasya hyarakSataH || 304 ||

यदधीते यद् यजते यद् ददाति यदर्चति । तस्य षड्भागभाग् राजा सम्यग् भवति रक्षणात् ॥ ३०५ ॥

Whatever (merit a man gains by) reading the Veda, by sacrificing, by charitable gifts, (or by) worshipping (Gurus and gods), the king obtains a sixth part of that in consequence of his duly protecting (his kingdom).

yadadhIte yad yajate yad dadAti yadarcati | tasya SaDbhAgabhAg rAjA samyag bhavati rakSaNAt || 305 ||
