ऋग्वेदो देवदैवत्यो यजुर्वेदस्तु मानुषः । सामवेदः स्मृतः पित्र्यस्तस्मात् तस्याशुचिर्ध्वनिः ॥ १२४ ॥

sanskrit

The Rig-veda is declared to be sacred to the gods, the Yagur-veda sacred to men, and the Sama-veda sacred to the manes; hence the sound of the latter is impure (as it were).

english translation

Rgvedo devadaivatyo yajurvedastu mAnuSaH | sAmavedaH smRtaH pitryastasmAt tasyAzucirdhvaniH || 124 ||
