ब्राह्मो दैवस्तथैवार्षः प्राजापत्यस्तथाऽसुरः । गान्धर्वो राक्षसश्चैव पैशाचश्चाष्टमोऽधमः ॥ २१ ॥

(They are) the rite of Brahman (Brahma), that of the gods (Daiva), that of the Rishis (Arsha), that of Pragapati (Pragapatya), that of the Asuras (Asura), that of the Gandharvas (Gandharva), that of the Rhashasas (Rakshasa), and that of the Pisakas (Paisaka).

brAhmo daivastathaivArSaH prAjApatyastathA'suraH | gAndharvo rAkSasazcaiva paizAcazcASTamo'dhamaH || 21 ||

यो यस्य धर्म्यो वर्णस्य गुणदोषौ च यस्य यौ । तद् वः सर्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि प्रसवे च गुणागुणान् ॥ २२ ॥

Which is lawful for each caste (varna) and which are the virtues or faults of each (rite), all this I will declare to you, as well as their good and evil results with respect to the offspring.

english translation

yo yasya dharmyo varNasya guNadoSau ca yasya yau | tad vaH sarvaM pravakSyAmi prasave ca guNAguNAn || 22 ||

षडानुपूर्व्या विप्रस्य क्षत्रस्य चतुरोऽवरान् । विश्।शूद्रयोस्तु तानेव विद्याद् धर्म्यानराक्षसान् ॥ २३ ॥

One may know that the first six according to the order (followed above) are lawful for a Brahmana, the four last for a Kshatriya, and the same four, excepting the Rakshasa rite, for a Vaisya and a Sudra.

SaDAnupUrvyA viprasya kSatrasya caturo'varAn | viz|zUdrayostu tAneva vidyAd dharmyAnarAkSasAn || 23 ||

चतुरो ब्राह्मणस्याद्यान् प्रशस्तान् कवयो विदुः । राक्षसं क्षत्रियस्यैकमासुरं वैश्यशूद्रयोः ॥ २४ ॥

The sages state that the first four are approved (in the case) of a Brahmana, one, the Rakshasa (rite in the case) of a Kshatriya, and the Asura (marriage in that) of a Vaisya and of a Sudra.

caturo brAhmaNasyAdyAn prazastAn kavayo viduH | rAkSasaM kSatriyasyaikamAsuraM vaizyazUdrayoH || 24 ||

पञ्चानां तु त्रयो धर्म्या द्वावधर्म्यौ स्मृताविह । पैशाचश्चासुरश्चैव न कर्तव्यौ कदा चन ॥ २५ ॥

But in these (Institutes of the sacred law) three of the five (last) are declared to be lawful and two unlawful; the Paisaka and the Asura (rites) must never be used.

paJcAnAM tu trayo dharmyA dvAvadharmyau smRtAviha | paizAcazcAsurazcaiva na kartavyau kadA cana || 25 ||
