तस्माच्छक्रविनाशाय वृत्रमुत्पादयाम्यहम् । लोकाः पश्यन्तु मे वीर्य तपसश्न॒ बल॑ महत् ॥ ५-९-४६ ॥
'For this reason, I will create Vritra, with a view to destroying Shakra. Let the worlds witness my valour and the great strength of my austerities. '
english translation
tasmAcchakravinAzAya vRtramutpAdayAmyaham । lokAH pazyantu me vIrya tapasazna॒ bala॑ mahat ॥ 5-9-46 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसच पश्यतु देवेन्द्रो दुरात्मा पापचेतन: । उपस्पृश्य ततः क्रुद्धस्तपस्वी सुमहायशा: ॥५-९-४७ ॥
Let the evil-souled and evil-minded Indra of the gods also behold.’ That extremely famous and enraged ascetic touched water.
english translation
saca pazyatu devendro durAtmA pApacetana: । upaspRzya tataH kruddhastapasvI sumahAyazA: ॥5-9-47 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअग्नौ हुत्वा समुत्पाद्य घोर वृत्रमुवाच ह । इन्द्रशत्रो विवर्धस्व प्रभावात् तपसो मम ॥ ५-९-४८ ॥
He (Tvashtra) offered oblations into the fire. Having created the terrible Vritra, he told him, ‘O enemy of Indra! Through the strength of my asceticism, increase in power.’
english translation
agnau hutvA samutpAdya ghora vRtramuvAca ha । indrazatro vivardhasva prabhAvAt tapaso mama ॥ 5-9-48 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसो<वर्धत दिवं स्तब्ध्वा सूर्यवैश्वानरोपम: । कि करोमीति चोवाच कालसूर्य इवोदित: ॥ ५-९-४९ ॥
He (Vritra) grew and touched the sky and was like the sun and the fire. ‘What shall I do?’ he asked, like the sun at the time of destruction.
english translation
so<vardhata divaM stabdhvA sUryavaizvAnaropama: । ki karomIti covAca kAlasUrya ivodita: ॥ 5-9-49 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशक्रं जहीति चाप्युक्तो जगाम त्रिदिवं ततः । ततो युद्धं समभवद् वृत्रवासवयो्महत् ॥ ५-९-५० ॥
Having been told that he should kill Shakra, he went to heaven. And next ensued a great fight between Vritra and Indra.
english translation
zakraM jahIti cApyukto jagAma tridivaM tataH । tato yuddhaM samabhavad vRtravAsavayomahat ॥ 5-9-50 ॥
