क्षौमं चतुःसूत्रकसन्निबद्धं षडङ्गुलं शिक्यकवस्त्रं अस्याः । सूत्रप्रमाणं च दशाङ्गुलानि षडेव कक्ष्य उभयशिक्यमध्ये ॥ २६-०६ ॥

The Jyotiṣaka shall take two square pieces of white silk, the side being six inches long and attach the four ends of each to the ends of four strings each ten inches long; the length of the string attached to the middle of the beam shall be six inches.

kSaumaM catuHsUtrakasannibaddhaM SaDaGgulaM zikyakavastraM asyAH । sUtrapramANaM ca dazAGgulAni SaDeva kakSya ubhayazikyamadhye ॥ 26-06 ॥

याम्ये शिक्ये काञ्चनं सन्निवेश्यं शेषद्रव्याण्युत्तरे अम्बूनि चएव । तोयैः कौप्यैः सैन्धवैः सारसैश्च वृष्टिर् हीना मध्यमा चोत्तमा च ॥ २६-०७ ॥

He shall put gold weights in the southern (right) scale and the several articles to be weighed in the northern (left) scale; waters to be weighed shall also be put into the northern scale; if well-water should be found to weigh more when weighed the next day, there will be no rain in winter; if rain water should weigh more there will be moderate rain; if tank or lake water should weigh more there will be abundant rain.

yAmye zikye kAJcanaM sannivezyaM zeSadravyANyuttare ambUni caeva । toyaiH kaupyaiH saindhavaiH sArasaizca vRSTir hInA madhyamA cottamA ca ॥ 26-07 ॥

दन्तैर्नागा गोहयऽद्याश्च लोम्ना हेम्ना भूपाः शिक्थकेन द्विजाद्याः । तद्वद्देशा वर्षमासा दिशश्च शेषद्रव्याण्यात्मरूपस्थितानि ॥ २६-०८ ॥

The condition of elephants shall be determined by (weighing) their tusks; that of cows and horses by their hair; that of princes by gold; that of Brāhmaṇas and others by wax; that of countries, years, months and days shall also be determined by the wax, and of other articles by the articles themselves.

dantairnAgA gohaya'dyAzca lomnA hemnA bhUpAH zikthakena dvijAdyAH । tadvaddezA varSamAsA dizazca zeSadravyANyAtmarUpasthitAni ॥ 26-08 ॥

हैमी प्रधाना रजतेन मध्या तयोरलाभे खदिरेण कार्या । विद्धः पुमान्येन शरेण सा वा तुला प्रमाणेन भवेद्वितस्तिः ॥ २६-०९ ॥

Gold is the best material for making the beam of the balance; silver is of middle importance. If these two cannot be had, the beam may be of blackwood; it may also be of that arrow iron which was employed in killing a man. The length of the beam shall be twelve inches.

haimI pradhAnA rajatena madhyA tayoralAbhe khadireNa kAryA । viddhaH pumAnyena zareNa sA vA tulA pramANena bhavedvitastiH ॥ 26-09 ॥

हीनस्य नाशो अभ्यधिकस्य वृद्धिस्तुल्येन तुल्यं तुलितं तुलायाम् । एतत्तुलाकोशरहस्यं उक्तं प्राजेशयोगे अपि नरो विदध्यात् ॥ २६-१० ॥

That article which should be found to weigh less when weighed again will perish; that which weighs more will flourish; that which weighs neither more nor less will neither flourish nor decay. These are the secret laws relating to the balance and these may also be followed on the occasion of the Rohiṇī Yoga day.

hInasya nAzo abhyadhikasya vRddhistulyena tulyaM tulitaM tulAyAm । etattulAkozarahasyaM uktaM prAjezayoge api naro vidadhyAt ॥ 26-10 ॥
